His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said, reigned 1970 – 2020

"I was deeply saddened to hear of the death of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said. His devotion to Oman, to its development and to the care of his people was an inspiration. He will be remembered for his wise leadership and his commitment to peace and understanding between nations and between faiths. He was a good friend of my family and of the United Kingdom, and we are thankful for all he did to further strengthen the bond of friendship between our countries. My State Visit to Oman in 2010 remains a cherished memory. I offer my sincere and heartfelt condolences to the Omani people. May the long history of loyal friendship between our two countries continue.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, 12th January 2020.

HRH The Prince of Wales offers condolences to His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik 13th January 2020. The British delegation included the Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the Defence Secretary and the Chief of Staff.

In the renewed Renaissance the bilateral relationship moved forward with a visit by the Foreign Secretary to Oman in March and, after a delay in activity necessitated by the covid pandemic, visits by the Defence Secretary in September and by the Foreign Office Middle East Minister in October. These visits emphasised the continuing British commitment to the Sultanate as both countries face new challenges both internal and external.
