Christianity in Oman with Dr Andrew Thompson

As part of the British Omani Society's lecture series, Dr Andrew Thompson will present a lecture entitled 'Christianity in Oman' on December 9 at 5:00 pm for 6:00 pm. The lecture will explore the relationship between the distinctive Islamic beliefs (Ibadism) of Oman and how they define the experience of the church with regard to religious freedom. There has been little research about Christianity in this part of the world. Through the use of historical research, interviews and theological discourse, Andy Thompson analyzes and reveals the distinctive experience of the Church in Oman.

Reverend Canon Dr Andrew David Thompson, MBE, currently serves as a vicar in the Diocese of London. He holds degrees in Behavioural Sciences and a double Masters in Religious Studies. His PhD by Publication is based on his studies of the Church History in the Arabian Gulf and Christian-Muslim Relations.

His previous publications include The Christian Church in Kuwait: Religious Freedom in the Gulf (2010), Christianity in the UAE: Culture and Heritage (2011), Jesus of Arabia (2014), A Celebration of Tolerance: Religious Minorities in the UAE (2019), and more recently Christianity in Oman: Ibadism, Religious Freedom and the Church. He was cited an MBE from Queen Elizabeth II for services to Human Rights and Interfaith Dialogue in Kuwait and received a Pioneer of the Emirates award from H.H. Sheikh Maktoum, the Ruler of Dubai. He is a Canon of Bahrain Cathedral and a former Chairman of the Board for the Al Amana Centre, which is an Interfaith Resource based in Muscat, Oman.
