The British Omani Society supported a 4-day visit to the State Council of Oman by a delegation from the House of Lords, hosted by HE Dr Yahya bin Mahfoudh Al Mathri, Chairman of the State Council and facilitated by Hon. Saleh bin Mohammed Al-Zakwani, member of the State Council and Richard Muir, former British Ambassador to Oman and former Chairman of the British Omani Society.

The delegation included Lord Dear - Deputy Chairman of House of Lords, Baroness D’Souza, Lord Judge, Baroness Finn and Lord Dholakia, and was supported by Isabelle Habib and Eleanor Thomas from the British Omani Society.

The visit introduced members of the UK House of Lords to their counterparts in the Omani State Council (Majlis al Dawla) the appointed chamber of the Omani Parliament, with the objective of building the relationship between the two parliaments and sharing experiences. The delegation was also presented with the opportunity to meet with members of the Shura Council (Majlis al-Shura) the elected house of the Omani Parliament, in addition to representatives from certain ministries, the armed forces, private sector partners and the British Ambassador to Oman.

Trips to Jebel al Akhdar, Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, the national museum, and a cruise along the Muscat coastline gave members of the delegation the chance to experience the beauty and cultural heritage of Oman.

The visit formed part of ongoing efforts to build cooperation between the two upper chambers through a series of mutual visits, particularly in relation to parliamentary work and capacity building.
