On the 21st of February 2018, The New Generation Group was delighted to welcome Professor Eugene Rogan for an evening lecture titled ‘The Fall of the Ottomans 1918.’

An expert in his field, it was very interesting to hear Professor Rogan speak about the consequences of the dismemberment of the Ottoman Empire in the aftermath of the First World War.

Professor Rogan talked about how the Ottoman Empire sought protection from Germany and Austria-Hungary but ultimately lost and the role the British and French played in turning the Muslims against their Turkish rulers. Additionally, he talked about the Sykes picot agreement that partitioned the Arab lands and its subsequent catastrophic impact on the current Middle East, completely reshaping it.

As always, the successful event was attended by a diverse group of people including AOS and NGG members at the British Omani society’s premises at 34 Sackville Street in London and was documented by Beth Richards, the new intern at the Society.

In addition to asking questions after the lecture, there was an opportunity for guests to stay afterwards to enjoy refreshments and mingle while discussing the lecture with professor Eugene.

We would like to thank Professor Rogan for taking the time to speak at the British Omani Society and we are looking forward to working with him again in the future.

Eugene Rogan is Professor of modern Middle Eastern history at the University of Oxford and Director of the Middle East Centre, St Antony's College, Oxford. He is the author of the award-winning The Arabs: A History and The Fall of the Ottomans: The Great War in the Middle East.
