On Saturday 10 March, The British Omani Society participated in the Oman Open Day 2018 at the University of Leeds. The event was hosted by Leeds and Manchester Omani student groups, as well as the Oman Student Advisory Council and the Cultural Attaché Office.
New Generation Group and Communications Officer, Isabelle Habib, and the two newest AOS interns – Beth Richards and Jareer Al-Daoud, ran the Society’s stall! Lots of new students signed up to the NGG, and many entered our International Women’s Day themed competition, with the top three suggestions for “inspirational women” winning a brand new copy of Omani Women, a book by Helen Couchman, which was sponsored by the AOS!
The first-time author, Manar al-Hosni was also present with a stall of her own, promoting and signing copies of her new book Siren of the Desert! Alongside our stall, were the presentations of the poster entries for the Scientific Poster Competition. These interesting projects ranged hugely in scope, from medicine and psychology to advertising, marketing and education!
The afternoon activities were then proceeded by an assembly of sorts, which included a speech by His Excellency, Abdulaziz Al-Hanai about the importance of education, a multi-cultural musical performance by a group of Omani students, and the awarding of certificates of excellence to all those involved in the organisation of the day! We even managed to pick up a few ourselves! The winner of the Scientific Poster Competition was also announced to be Yassir Alisnake! Congratulations!
